Lap for Life 2018

ST PAUL’S ACADEMY ‘LAP FOR LIFE’ IN AID OF CENTREPOINT UK

Wednesday 10th October saw the community of St Paul’s Academy come together to take part in our annual ‘Lap for Life’, this year in aid of Centrepoint UK.

Following a successful first ever ‘2018 SPA SleepOut’ event, our 2018 ‘Lap for Life’ saw over 400 staff and students across years 7 to 11 join forces across the academy to walk, jog or run in support of the magnificent and vital work undertaken by Centrepoint UK.  Our Sports Leaders and Charity and Enterprise Committee teamed up to help make this event happen and raise as much money for Centrepoint UK as they could in the first few weeks of the new academic year.  In the weeks leading up to the event students have raised money through the use of sponsorship sheets as well as holding their very own cake sales.

The day of our ‘Lap for Life’ acted as a shining example of the true spirit and ethos of the community of St Paul’s Academy.  Teaming up side by side, beginning in the sportshall, staff and students enjoyed taking part in an energetic warm-up before engaging in either a walking or running route around the school campus.  The smiles, laughter and enjoyment clearly evident from all participants as they made their way around the route ensured a fantastic atmosphere was created and sustained throughout the duration of the event which this year was held earlier in our fundraising calendar.

This warm, caring atmosphere and feeling of togetherness is a thread that has echoed throughout the hallways of St Paul’s Academy in the weeks leading up to ‘Lap for Life’ 2018.  Pupils listened intently to assemblies which informed them of the vital work of Centrepoint UK.  Pupils have gained a greater understanding of the causes of youth homelessness, the solutions as well as what we as a community can do to help tackle this ever growing crisis in our society.  As part of our SPAchieve programme, students have also worked towards enhancing awareness and understanding of youth homelessness amongst their peers.  Such an enhanced sense of awareness and understanding of the reasons behind their fundraising and the cause they are supporting has helped students to fully engage with our charity and enterprise initiatives, showing great empathy and selflessness as they endeavoured to raise as much money as possible in aid of Centrepoint UK.

As a school community, both staff and students across the Academy have managed to raise a magnificent total of £2,214.27 in aid of Centrepoint UK.  In organising and delivering the event, Miss Duffy would like to thank staff, students and the wider community of St Paul’s Academy for their incredible support of our ‘Lap for Life’ event and fundraising initiatives.  This has been an incredible start to our charity and enterprise programme for this academic year and a trend which we as a school community wish to continue as the year unfolds.
